Steve Baum, a young New York City Probation Officer, is burned out. The author does a great job of developing this character’s creeping anxiety about his job when he is assigned a client whose decline seems as inevitable as the impact of a rock on the ground after it is dropped off the side of the building. Could he have done something about the course of the young man’s life? Baum’s thought: “I went in there to change them, but instead they’re changing me.” Great read, good characters.

Winner of 1992 Edgar Award for Best First Novel.
