Sheldon Siegel
Special Circumstances
Bantam
2000
Page-turner of a legal thriller with a likeable protagonist set in San Francisco (I love those, being an S.F. resident!) The main character, a law firm partner, can't cut the mustard in terms of bringing in business. On his last day, one of the other partners is killed and he winds up representing the main suspect.
Sheldon Siegel has done it again! "Final Verdict" serves up likeable characters Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez in an absorbing legal thriller set in San Francisco. In this, his fourth book, Siegel's voice has matured. His main character is still irreverent but a little less flip.
The story revolves around a character from a troubled neighborhood in downtown San Francisco. Leon Walker's fall from grace occurred years prior to the action in this book when he and his brother were tried for a murder and set free in what the local legal community felt was a miscarriage of justice. Now he's before the court to face a new murder charge and calls on Daley for help.
It's a fast and enjoyable read. San Francisco residents will enjoy the place descriptions, history, and timely references to political goings-on, but you don't have to live here to appreciate the book.
Incriminating Evidence and Criminal Intent are the other two books in the series so far.
